Thank for your support!
This week we were all a flutter when each class released their fully-grown butterflies! We remembered our life cycle learning very well and everyone agreed it was a wonderful moment when they flew off!
In maths we focused on problem-solving! We read the book ‘How many Legs’ by Kes Gray and calculated the total number of legs! Then, we took on a challenge, where we chose a number and worked out how to make that number of legs by selecting the right animals! We also practised the number sentences and representing the amount on ten frames!
In geography, we explored the oceans! We learned what an ocean is and how many there are. We identified the names of the five oceans and read ‘Meet the Oceans’ by Caryl Hart to find out more about them. We had a go putting the names of the oceans, in the correct place, on a blank world map.
Our creativity shone this week as we made many of our own wonderful sea creature crafts and pictures. We read ‘Mister Seahorse’ by Eric Carle and made beautiful seahorse collages by tearing and cutting tissue paper and adding detail with layers. Later in the week we have been doing a watercolour portrait of our buddies to give to them before they move on to their new adventures. Our adults were impressed by our focus, talent and care when creating our creative gifts.
In R.E. we listened to the Muslim story of The Sad Camel and talked about its teachings of kindness, respect and care. Following our discussion, we designed posters on how to care for animals!
Another fabulous week! Well done everyone!
Reception & Sports Captains Dance
Our two Reception classes had a treat on Wednesday. Whilst school welcomed our new nursery joiners for a 'stay and play', our superb Year 6 Sports Captains led an intense workout, which was then followed by a dazzling display of dancing.
Year 1 – The Extraordinary Gardener and Creating a Storm!
This week Year 1 have enjoyed the story The Extraordinary Gardener by Sam Boughton. It tells the story of Joe who spends his time imagining a wonderful world filled with exotic plants and unusual animals. He decides to plant a seed on his balcony and soon gets everyone in the neighbourhood involved with growing plants. We took inspiration from the story by imagining and designing our own extraordinary gardens, thinking which plants we could include for the bees. We are looking forward to exploring the story further next week.
In music, we listened to Storm interlude from 'Peter Grimes' by Benjamin Britten. Year 1 enjoyed dancing to the music and sharing what it made them think of. We listened out for how the waves, rain, thunder, wind and sunshine were represented in the music, considering the tempo and volume. Then Year 1 worked in pairs to create their own story of storm using voices and body sounds. We loved seeing their wonderful, creative performances. Well done Year 1!
Year 2 - Trip to George Muller Museum
Year 2 celebrated all they have leant this term in our 'Brilliant Bristolian's' topic by taking a visit to the Muller Museum. It really made George Muller's important work in the orphanages of Bristol come to life.
We were lucky enough to have a dry beggar bush trip this week and it was so much fun! We had a range of new activities this week including archery, sensory trail, problem solving and nature artwork. The children as ever threw themselves into each workshop and showed incredible listening and cooperation. The rest of the week as you know was busy and full of special visitors! We continued with out science topic as usual and dissected plants to kick off our final module. The children were really engaged and are looking forward to planting and observing more in the coming weeks. Year 3 truly rose to the occasion this week and both Mrs Duquemin and myself are so proud of the maturity, behaviour and engagement showed by all of the children this week. Thank you year 3 for just being you!
This week in Art Year 3, in preparation for their step up to Year 4, found out more about the graphite scale of pencils. They explored a range of art pencils B-6B and made observational drawings of fruits and vegetables. They spent time drawing what they could see and explored how they could represent dark and light areas of their still life.
This week, our Year 4s have really dug into their learning! In geography, they investigated soil erosion using empty milk bottles and heaps of soil to uncover how the Grand Canyon was formed—talk about groundbreaking work! Meanwhile, in computing, they crunched the numbers and successfully finished their Scratch times tables games. Their coding skills are really multiplying! It's safe to say our young geographers and programmers are on solid ground and proving to be quite the 'rock stars' in class!
Year 5 - DT Come Dine with Me Project
Year 5 have been busy at home this term, working on their DT project homework. This was to follow up on their “Come Dine With Me” DT unit that they did last term. The children were charged with creating a recipe book, which focussed on a “hero ingredient” of their choice, or they could make something in the kitchen and create a cookery demonstration video. We have been bowled over by the effort that has gone in to these projects. Illustrations have been beautiful; videos have given Masterchef a run for their money and we’ve spent a lot of time drooling over hero ingredients such as the versatility of apples, egg and chicken!
Here are some examples of the amazing books and videos we have seen.
Year 6- Secondary transition, and cubist art
Year 6 have been spending this week thinking about their transition to secondary school and the challenges and opportunities that will entail. Over a series of lessons we have been examining worries and fears, challenges and opportunities and looking forward. They have been so mature and reflective as they learn strategies and ways to prepare for the next stage of their journey. They have also been fantastic ambassadors during our Ofsted inspection. Year 6 we are really proud of you!
Building towards a painting on the theme of ‘Still Life’, we have completed some preliminary sketchbook work. We studied the work of Georges Braque, a Cubist artist, who worked with Picasso. We also looked at the work of British artist Ben Nicholson.
The OFSTED inspectors were not the only special visitors to Christ Church on Tuesday, our children had a magical, musical treat from Clifton College; Soul Band (a musical group of Clifton College pupils) took to our stage to perform a medley of tunes to inspire some dazzling dancing and soulful singing.
