Fun-filled Friday in the fresh air! The Obstacle arrived on our games court early this morning before our school gates opened in readiness for our Comic Relief challenge. Each class has taken a turn to navigate the course wriggling and crawling stylishly through the obstacles from start to finish. Well done to everyone for giving it ago and raising £200 to give to Comic Relief. Thank you to Mr Campbell, Miss Barsby and Mr Curry for creating our school challenge.
Here are a couple of photos-more to follow next week.

Reception have had an exciting week of learning as usual - using the ipads to learn their sounds and tricky words and learning about the life cycle of turtles but also both classes had their first French lesson with Madame Maurier on Thursday! They enjoyed saying ‘bonjour’ to each other and learning a simple French song. They will continue to see Madame Maurier each Thursday to learn more French songs and generally have fun in another language.
Fantastique Reception!
This week year 1 have been writing Spring fact files. We looked for signs of Spring in our outdoor spaces and wrote about the seasonal changes which happen with the weather, plants, and animals at this special time of year. Since being back in school we have had lots of first-hand experience of the mixed Springtime weather! Year 1 are also very excited to be taking part in the Stop Everything and Sing event organised by Bristol Plays Music. Look at us learning some sign language to accompany the song 'Good To Be Me'.
This week Year 2 have been working so hard writing emails in Literacy and making posters to attract tourists to Mars. Also, the children created an alien version of themselves and then described each characteristic using amazing adjectives. They have blown us away with their 'space-tacular' work and enthusiam this week.
In Maths, Year 2 began our new topic 'fractions'. The children carried out an investigation to find out how many halves different shapes have and then they sorted them into categories. We learned two very important words 'numerator' and 'denominator' and we even learned a fun tune to help us remember their definitions!
Keep flourishing Year 2 - together we learn more!
Year 3 have been scientists this week! We have a new topic of ‘Rocks’. We began by sorting and identifying a range of rocks. We then took soil samples from around school and observed it’s layers with and without water. We have ended the week with fossils (we got very excited about this one!) The children had lots of existing knowledge which was amazing to hear. We built on this, studied the timeline of a fossil and finished the week by creating our own fossils and of plaster!
Year 4 have had a jam-packed week learning and writing about deforestation in the rainforest (including some intense debating), solving fractions problems using different representations, composing their very own lockdown song with Bristol Plays Music, investigating climate by looking at a range of world maps and forest school. They have all worked super hard and produced some brilliant persuasive letters to President Bolsonaro, trying to convince him to protect the Amazon.
In forest school, we learnt about some of the most common garden birds in Bristol, made our own nests and even spotted a pair of great tits and a pair of blue tits building their nests in the walls of the houses opposite the school. What will you spot in your own neighbourhoods? Let us know!
This week the Year 5 children have been thoroughly engaged in their play script writing of Odysseus and the Cyclops. They have drawn upon their acting skills from last week to interpret the story as well as using the class text; The Adventures of Odysseus by Hugh Lupton, Daniel Morden, and Christina Balit.
During Friday maths, children enjoyed playing, amongst other challenges, a matching pairs fraction game. The game aimed to match pairs of cards. If two cards matched the cards stayed face-up. If two cards did not match, the cards were returned face-down. As the children played it was great to hear the mathematical vocabulary used in discussions and see the different strategies used to play.
As well as this, in our PSHE topic ‘Healthy Me’, they have learned more about basic first aid, notably how and when it is appropriate to support someone by putting them in the Recovery Position. They were all extremely mature in supporting a peer by verbally talking their partner through the steps and then switching roles and having a turn – ensuring all children are confident in this basic skill.
For homework, we received so many wonderful poems. The focus was to describe a month or season through the use of language, stanzas, and any other chosen poetry features. Well done – another wonderful week of sharing and developing skills.
Year 6 Expressions and Equations
Year 6 have been beginning their journey in algebra this week. They have been using equipment to explore what numbers and letters represent in expressions and equations.
They have also been practising hard for their Easter song which they will share with you soon.
In Literacy we have been writing our final Letter, highlighting a character transformation.
French Singing and Storytelling
Children have really enjoyed learning French again with their peers in the classroom. They have been singing new songs, playing games, listening to stories and leaning new vocabulary.
Reception are learning songs in French:
- Comment t’appelles-tu? (What your name?)
- Tête épaule genoux pied (Head should knees and toes)
- Une patate (A potatoe)
- Dans mon château (In my castle)
We are also playing Simon says in French (Jacques a dit)!
Year 1 are focusing on a new song called Promenons-nous dans les bois (Let’s walk in the woods). They are learning the names of 10 items of clothing and the name for wolf in French, le loup.
Year 2 are learning to retell a familiar story - Le navet énorme (The Enormous Turnip) - in French. They are also learning to sing Le fermier dans son pré (The farmer in his field).
Year 3 children are learning core vocabulary of 9 animal nouns and 6 colours. The linguistic focus is gender, articles, plurals and adjectives.
Year 4 are focusing on retelling a familiar story – La chenille qui fait des trous (The Very Hungry Caterpillar) – in French (numbers, days of the week, fruits, foods).
Year 5 are focusing on shapes and prepositions of place, to be used creatively in an art project focusing on the work of French artist Matisse.
Year 6 are learning about mealtimes and how to give their opinions of different food and drink in French.
