With the return of more favourite school activities; Beggar Bush, Yoga, inter-school sport, swimming to name but a few; add in the scorching sunshine at the start of the week and it definitely feels like a Summer term. The teachers are utilising our outdoor spaces and taking inspiration from the natural environment in our school grounds.
Following the announcement on Monday to extend the date for the easing of restrictions we are working through our school events planned for the coming weeks and I will write further on Monday with details.
Welcome back into school to 5HT who have been home learning, Mrs Taylor and Miss Hill have been so impressed with your positivity and the care that you have shown for each other’s wellbeing- well done both children and parents/carers!
Monday 21st June is National music day and we are looking forward to some foot tapping fun Christ Church style, which we will share with you next week.
Next week is PEPPER Week.
Fun Fact:
A pepper has the highest levels of Vitamin C of any produce item. A large red pepper provides more than 300% of your daily requirement of Vitamin C and has three times more than an orange. Why does no one talk about this? You hear about oranges and Vitamin C all the time, but never peppers!
Have a look at this tasty recipe for stuffed peppers.
Wow what a busy week inside and outside this week. We started the week with an oral re-telling of our book Aaaarrgghh, Spider! We used our amazing facts to write sentences about spiders. In the outdoor area we made potions with all the wonderful lavender and other leaves and flowers in our school grounds. We have been minibeast hunting in our garden and found lots of minibeasts under leaves, soil and on the ground.
We also developed our fine motor skills by using tweezers to rescue the spiders from the red gloop and using a hole punch to put the eggs onto leaves.
We learnt about the butterfly life cycle this week. Our caterpillars are growing and we cannot wait to see them make their cocoons. In maths we have been grouping and sharing. We have enjoyed sharing flowers between plant pots and threading beads into groups of 2, 3, 4 or 5.
We have loved our week this week!
This term in Art, Year 1 are creating artwork inspired by nature. This week we looked at nature sculptures by artists Andy Goldsworthy and Martin Hill and discussed which natural materials had been used and what we liked about the pieces. We then went outside to look for a beautiful or interesting natural objects to sketch. We focused on looking closely at the tiny details that we might not usually notice and tried to include these in our sketches.
Year 2 Monet and Sunflower planting
In Year 2 we have been busy bees this week. In Art we learned about one of the world's most famous artists, Claude Monet. We used oil pastels to create some fabulous landscape settings, taking inspiration from his famous bridge and water lilies works. Our final pieces are breath-taking. We are very proud of our artistic talents!
In Science this week, we became master gardeners as we began our investigation on what plants need to grow. We discussed the meaning of a fair test and set up controls to ensure that we were carrying out our experiment fairly. We enjoyed planting our own sunflower seeds in our outdoor classroom. Over the next few weeks, we'll notice how our seed grows into a flower and write our diaries to document our work.
Well done Year 2 - you've been superstar learners this week!
It has been a Science bonanza for Year 3 this week as we have moved onto the new subject ‘plants’. As the weather is improving, we got outside and started some experiments! We first wanted to explore how plants grow. After a little research we decided to do some planting of our own…year 3 style. We made potato heads! Using tights, soil, googly eyes and grass seeds we have all made our own little creature and are eagerly awaiting it’s grass hair to grow. Updates will follow but we have attached the ‘before’ picture for your enjoyment. We then went onto to experiment with 5 plants from the village. We have one ‘control’ plant that will receive water, sunlight, air and nutrients. However, all the others we have changed one variable…you can see from the pictures the some had to have a little haircut! We will update you with our findings as we are very excited about all our experiments.
Year 4 had an amazing day at Beggar Bush on Thursday and the adults were all blown away by everyone's team building and communication skills. We did Archery, problem solving, low ropes and orienteering - we loved every second and it was such a treat to be outside all day!
This week some of Year 5 have been learning in school and some at home. The aspirational attitude that children display in class has transferred seamlessly to home and the pieces of work that children have shared on Google Classroom have been exemplary. Here is an example of an Art task called ‘View from my Window’. The children in 5HT were given the task of sitting at their window and observing the world for ten minutes. Then they came away, found somewhere different to sit and recreated from memory their drawings. All displayed good recollection of what they could see, used a range of pencil lines and pencil pressure to recreate soft shapes such as foliage and structured lines for man-made features.
Both classes have immersed themselves even further into the world of Maia (main character in our Power of Reading text: Journey to the River Sea). One particular task saw the children reflecting upon how some of the characters may live in a specific location but carry out their day and routine in two very different ways. Children represented this contrast by creating two opposing images of life in the Amazon. The tedious, empty life at the Carters vs the rich diversity and colour of the Amazon Rainforest.
In Science, the children have been exploring the concept of habitats and what makes a habitat viable. Here are Ethan and Richard's fact files from 5WB
On Tuesday, Sally (a volunteer from the RNLI) spoke to year 6 about water safety via zoom. She told us about the importance of the 5000 members of the lifeboat crews around the country and highlighted the importance of swimming safely on lifeguarded beaches over the summer. Did you know that a red and yellow flag means that it is a safe swimming area, a black and white flag indicates a no swimming zone as it is for surfers, kayaks and paddleboarders and a wind sock means that you are not allowed to use inflatables in that area? We were amazed to learn that 95% of the RNLI is made up of volunteers, many of whom have other day jobs and will drop everything to rush to the lifeboat station if they get paged with an emergency. Sally was great at explaining general water and sea safety but also highlighting the water safety around us in Bristol especially as the North Somerset coastline has the second highest tidal range in the world.
It was amazing to return to competitive school sport on Tuesday after school, where the sun shone brightly on our Year 5 and 6 cricket squads. There were acrobatic catches; there were 4s and 6s; there were run-outs; all formed a wonderful afternoon of cricket at Bedminster Cricket Club. The players displayed great teamwork, communication whilst having a brilliant time - some practising their skills and some playing cricket for the first time.
Thank you to Miss Cator for giving up your time to lead the Year 5 team. Plus, thank you Miss Barsby for coming along to support out players. Thanks to parents who cheered the children on and also, helped with transport to the event. Stay tuned next week for more cricket news.
