We couldn’t let World Music Day pass on 21st June without preparing a song or two, well actually what about having a concert. Mrs Ford and Mme Maurier have chorused our school together in our bubbles this afternoon, in the sunshine, on the playground, to enjoy a musical celebration. Compered by Mrs Brown the children performed what they had rehearsed with their class teachers. Year 3 showcased their Ukulele skills after their 10 weeks of tuition. We will share what we have recorded with you next week.
Pastor Ruthy and Emelye set up a Prayer Space at the front of our school on Tuesday and Wednesday for children in Years 4 and 6. The Year 6 children explored the theme of transition and both year groups had time to be still and reflect. Thank you so much Ruthy and Emelye for providing this space for us.
Extra-curricular sport opportunities are in full swing this week; Y5/6 Kwik cricket, Y5/6 Football tournament, Early bird Y5/6 netball club-what a busy week. Thank you to Miss Barsby and the teachers who have kindly given their time to support these events- and didn’t we do well!?
Our adventurous Year 5 children attended All Aboard sailing club for a morning of water sports on the docks. This was a first for Christ Church and an activity we hope to continue as the children unanimously loved the experience, even those that capsized!
Thank you to Inti’s Daddy in Reception for taking time to bring a bee hive into school for the Reception children to learn about honey bees. Did you know Bumble Bees don’t have ears?
Please read the letter about term 6 events sent on Tuesday 22nd June for further details about what we have planned.
Class photographs
These are taking place in school on Monday 28th June. Children please come smartly dressed in your uniform. Christ Church School receive 4 stars on national School Guide
We are delighted to have been awarded a great 4 stars rating on the National School Guide.
The school guide rates schools across the country and enables parents to benchmark between schools. Our page shows some great results that reflect the performance of our wonderful children.
It would be great if you could leave reviews on this site about the life of the school and what you children enjoy about Christ Church School. You can leave reviews at the bottom of the page:

Six amazing girls from Year 6 asked me to run a French choir this term. They chose two French songs (Voilà from Barbara Pravi and Bim Bam Toi from Carla), both from the Eurovision contexts. They practised singing them at lunch time and learned them by heart. They sang them at the concert on Friday to celebrate International Music day which started in France in 1982 (La fête de la musique). We will share this next week.
For this event, each year group learned a French song too and performed it on Friday. The recording of the songs done during the week are here:

Reception make some noise and learn about bees!
What another action packed week in reception we have had. We started with a bang as we celebrated World Music Day. We learnt about different genres of music. The firm favourites were rock and pop. We enjoyed experimenting with instruments. We learnt about keeping a steady beat and how to play instruments loudly and quietly.
We were lucky enough to have a visit from one of our parents who taught us all about honey bees. We learnt lots of facts and now know how we can help look after bees. We cant wait for next week where we will be writing instructions to make honey sandwiches.
We have also really enjoyed learning about adjectives to describe minibeasts and creating maps of our own farms just like the map from our book ‘What the Ladybird Heard.’
It has been a fun week and we are looking forward to learning about more minibeasts next week.
Year 1 Somebody Swallowed Stanley
Year 1 have been busy learning our own version of Somebody Swallowed Stanley. We practised retelling the story with actions and then drew a story map of pictures to help us remember it. Then we used our story maps to write our stories, working hard to include capital letters and full stops in our work. We also designed a front cover for the story and used watercolours to paint them. We were very impressed with all the beautiful work we saw!
To celebrate World Music Day, Year 1 watched a performance of Kerry Andrew’s song ‘No Place Like’ performed by the wonderful Ten Pieces Children’s Choir. We spoke about the significance of the piece and what actions the children were doing to match the sounds they were making within their singing. We then had a go at copying some of our favourite actions from the piece.
On Monday, Year 2 discovered they had shrunk down to the size of a minibeast. They went off exploring the playground from a very different perspective. This has given us inspiration for our creative writing story this week. We are looking forward to sharing these with you soon!
As part of World Music Day, we recorded our Eco raps which we wrote last week! We are looking forward to preforming some of these in our school performance!
Eco rap by Lux, Isabelle, Cecily, Belle, Sasha, Louis!
OK Y’all theres a very big commotion
Plastic is going in the ocean.
Keep the plastic out of the sea
To keep it clean for you and me.
People are throwing rubbish in the sea
And animals cant get free.
We can pick up litter and put it in the bin
Its an eco friendly sort of thing.
People are killing whales
And leaving blood trails.
Creatures
Are losing their features.
Animals homes are being chopped down
Animals homes are now a ghost town!
A week full of exciting opportunities in Year 3 this week. We were lucky enough to have Carolyn visit our school and take both classes for a very relaxing and calming yoga session. The children were really focused and enjoyed stretching and slowing down the pace of the day! We also continued with our DT learning were we made more mechanisms. This week we looked at leavers and linkages and created our own grabbers!
Finally an update on the grass heads. Every day year 3 have rushed in to check the progress of their grass head. Each day it has been so exciting to see something we planted grow and give our characters some personality! We are starting to think they may now need a haircut…
Year 3 are ready for Euro 2020!
Year 3 are ready for the Euro 2020! This week, they learned the names of the 24 countries taking part. They had to colour the flags revising French colours. We discussed the similarities and differences between the names of countries in French and English. They guessed some of them but found some more difficult to translate. For example: L’Angleterre – England, L’Allemagne – Germany, Le Pays de Galles – Wales, L’Écosse – Scotland, Les Pays-Bas – Netherlands.
In Art we have been focusing on still life and observational drawing. The children built up to their final piece starting with pencil drawings and oil pastels before finally using watercolour pencils. All the adults have been blown away by their artistic skills. The children thought very carefully about their compositions and focused on their use of shading, form and tone. We were also inspired by the still life paintings by Cézanne.
Year 5 had their first trip on Tuesday and Thursday this week and it is fair to say they absolutely sailed through it! The team spirit, resilience and sense of ‘have a go’ spirit was lovely to see. Whilst there, the children worked in pairs to steer and sail a small sailing boat across the harbour and back as well as navigating to collect balls that had been thrown in to the water for them to collect and throw on. Well done Year 5.
We had fun starting our coordinate work in numeracy this week by writing secret messages to the rest of the class. Conscience Alley before letter writing really helped us get in role and see different points of view.
A great performance from the Year 5/6 Football team - great to get back on the football pitch!
Year 6 World Music Day and Prayer Space
6ED celebrated World Music day with a selection of performances by brave class members. Anna played Mia and Sebastian’s Theme song and Gemma entertained us with Ecossaise in G Major by Beethoven. Seth played ‘Song of Time’ on the ocarina and Gracie performed ‘Hey, Hey, Baby, Hey’ by Eric Clapton.
Back in class we thought about the blues as a genre and watched BB King in action in his hey- day. As a class we’ve learnt a warm-up son called ‘Hi Hi’ which we are using to wake us up in the mornings.
We listened to an a cappella performance of No Place Like’ by Kerry Andrew which was written around the theme of what ‘home’ meant to the children who performed it. It was a challenging piece and led us to consider rhythm, tempo and melody.
We used the idea of our home to write rhyming couplets and, under the guidance of Angry Dan the poet, illustrated them in a Pop Art style to mirror our work on David Hockney and Andy Warhol in Term 1.
Ruthy has also led us in a prayer space session where the children have had the opportunity to relax, find some peace and contemplate their transition to secondary school next year.
