Next Friday 18th March is Red Nose Day, we would like to take the opportunity to support the fundraising effort. The message on the Red Nose website is copied below. Children may come to school in non-school uniform and could include a splash of red/yellow/blue to show support for the causes. Please donate £1 or an amount you would like/able to.
Red Nose Day is coming. And whatever you do, no matter how small, you can help people live free from poverty, violence and discrimination. This includes funding organisations that are supporting people right now in Ukraine, and those attempting to cross the border.
Because you have the power to change lives.
Parent/carer meetings with the class teachers was shared last Thursday via Szapp and parentpay. This is an opportunity midway through the school year to find out how your child is progressing and to ask any questions you may have. Please request an appointment via the online booking system and call the school office if you need help with this.
In reception this week we have had a fun and busy week. We enjoyed yoga with Carolyn on Monday and worked on our breathing and being still. In maths we learnt about number bonds to 10 and enjoyed using resources to investigate pairs of numbers that make 10. We have continued our learning about people who help us to learn about the job of a vet. We have talked about the features of non-fiction books and used books to help us learn about the people who help us. We have been using our sounds to make mini books and write labels for our creations. In phonics we have been sound spotters and used highlighters to find sounds. We were very excited to have highlighters and found it magic that you could still see the writing underneath.
Year 1 Storytelling, Weather Diaries and Clay
This week in Literacy Year 1 have been learning to retell our story ‘The Bog Baby’. We came up with actions to help us remember the story and drew our own story maps. Then we practised retelling the story with partners and performed them to the rest of the class. In Geography, we have been learning about the weather and have been tracking daily changes in the weather by keeping weather diaries. We have also painted our clay lions that we made last term and we are looking forward to seeing the finished pieces when they come out of the kiln!
Year 2 have had another fun filled week at school. In Maths we have continued to learn about symmetry. This week we got out the mirrors to find the line of symmetry on 2 dimensional shapes. We had fun proving where the lines of symmetry were and even managed to spot some marvellous mistakes made by our teachers who were trying to trick us!
We have also used our maths skills in our DT lesson this week. We are learning about a healthy, balanced diet and we did some research to find out how much sugar is in a variety of drinks. We tried a teaspoon amount of each drink to see if we could tell by tasting which has the most sugar. By looking at the nutritional information on the packaging we could see the amount of sugar and were surprised to find out it was orange juice that had the most sugar! We used our maths skills to turn the amount of sugar into sugar cubes. This really helped us to visualise how much sugar was in each drink.
We are continuing to really enjoy our space topic and this week in literacy we thought about how we would look if we were aliens. First we drew amazing pictures of our alien-selves and then we did a piece of writing describing our aliens using lots of noun phrases. We used conjunctions to make our sentences longer and more interesting. We hope you enjoy looking at some of them!
Year 3 Moses and the Burning Bush
This week in RE, we read the story of ‘Moses and the Burning bush’ and talked about why people take their shoes off (respect/place of worship). We focused on the symbol of God as fire and wrote down some of the words that represent God. We then moved onto Saul’s story of his conversion on the road to Damascus. The children discussed the similarities and differences in the stories including; symbols of God, messages, being asked to perform a task.
The children enjoyed our first lesson of cricket last Friday, where they were learning ball skills and runs.
Our 3/4 footballers had a fantastic time during the first round of the football league. Across both teams, there were wins, draws and a few loses, but most importantly, all the children had FUN (this was clear through their bright red, smiling faces after each game). Well done guys - you did our school proud.
Year 4 have been busy being musicians and computing technicians this week! In music, we learnt about structure, texture and dynamics. We used body percussion and online keyboards to create rainforest inspired compositions and we worked in groups to perform a range of difference pieces. In computing, we learnt about editing the HTML of a web page to change the layout of a website and the text and images.
On Thursday 4LC, the winners of the 'Get Caught Reading' competition visited Waterstones bookshop. The sun shone and the children represented the school brilliantly both on the walk to Clifton village and in the bookshop.
The children were able to exchange their World Book Day token for a book, look at the books and listen to Miss Cator read a story in the bookshop. The children demonstrated many of our school values as they thoughtfully chose two reading for pleasure books for their bookshelf. Well done 4LC and thank you to Waterstones for having us.
Year 5 the Adventures of Odysseus
Year 5 have fully immersed themselves into their new literacy book - The Adventures of Odysseus. The children have completed a range of Ancient Greek activities from designing Ancient Greek God/Goddess posters, top trump cards to locating significant places in the Ancient Greek world. In literacy we have used our inference skills to predict what characteristics our protagonists have.
Computing saw us tinkering with a new piece of hardware called ‘BBC:Mircrobits’. The children had a go at coding a flashing heart using the app and then downloaded it onto the Microbit to check if it worked. We are looking forward to using them again to see what else we can code with them.
In DT this week children learned how beef, the main ingredient of a Bolognese sauce, is farmed and we discussed key welfare issues surrounding the rearing of cattle. We also used our baking skills to make bread, which tasted delicious.

Year 6 have been beavering away with their writing this week. They almost had steam coming out of their ears because they were writing so much! They watched a dramatisation of the game Rock, Paper, Scissors, and then had to retell the events where Rock and Paper fought against Scissors. Within their writing, they were trying to include as many different types of sentences as possible. Outside (Inside) sentences for example.
Meanwhile, in RE, Year 6 have been considering what different religions say about death and life after death. This week, Chris Brown from Christ Church, came in to explain what happens at a Christian funeral and the children then thought about how this may be comforting to Christians. The children thought really deeply about the verse from the Bible, where it says in John 11:26, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will live, even though he dies."
During Music this week, the children learnt all about the Kodaly method and practised clapping and saying rhythms. They used their four rhythms to create a performance in pairs, which they then shared with the class. It was brilliant to see how different each performance was. Here we are practising:
This month's reading newsletter is celebrating the books that you can buy with your World Book Day £1 book tokens and how to support reading for pleasure at home. We hope that you all find an opportunity to use your tokens at a local bookstore and find time to read as a family at home this month. Please also check out the World Book Day website https://www.worldbookday.com/ for reading related videos, author talks, audiobooks and activities. Happy reading everyone!
World Book Day is a charity funded by publishers & booksellers in the UK & Ireland. Our mission is to give every child and young person a book of their own.
The peppers were in the spotlight this week. It was amazing to see them included in packed lunches. Thanks to our kitchen team, who also included peppers everyday in the school dinner hall. Next week, broccoli takes centre stage. We are excited to see how broccoli is included in the packed lunch boxes. Clover (Y6) suggested packing some tender stem broccoli as a tasty addition.
