Thank you to parents/carers who attended the meetings with the class teachers this week. It was great to welcome everyone into school to share the children’s books and learning. Next week, we look forward to welcoming everyone to our Easter celebration at the Church on Thursday, 7th April at 10 am. Children should come to school as normal, then we will walk and meet everyone in the Church. It will be a lovely way for our community to end the term together. The children have been learning some songs to sing either as a year group or whole school. Refreshments will be available in the Church from 9.15am.
On Thursday, Jane and Tim led the Wow of Trees workshop for Year 2 and the woodland animals workshop for Reception. It was a rather chillier day than last Thursday-what a contrast.
School sport-our winning streak continues…the Y5/6 High 5 netball squad won their final and have reached the County finals. The Y5/6 hockey team came second last Friday in their tournament. Please see the reports.
We can feel the Disco fever today in school-thank you to our PTA for organising this for the children, everyone is so excited.

The fifth and final week of VegPower culminated with Pea Week. Our wonderful chefs from Reception produced a tasty Pea Hummus, that included only four ingredients; peas, chickpeas, garlic and lemon juice. They also provided us with a selection of crunchy vegetables to dip (carrots, peppers and celery). The Healthy Planet:Healthy School campaign marches on. The Tuesday Tasting Table will definitely return in the future. Stay tuned for more news.

The Reading Newsletter this month is celebrating a wide range of fiction and non-fiction books, with recommendations from Mr Curry, Mrs Duquemin, Mr Eades, Mr Lusted, Miss Noble, Maria and Miss B. Lots of their recommendations have come from their class trips to the Yellow Lighted Book Shop which came to school last week. We hope you enjoy! Please also check out the reading comprehension focus at the bottom if you would like some guidance on how to summarise. Happy Reading!
Reception Forest School – ‘The Gruffalo’ – extreme weather version!
Reception were lucky to have a visit from Jane and Tim from SG Forest school this week. After listening to the story of The Gruffalo the children were encouraged to use their listening and cooperation skills to build a home for one of the animals from the story. They then thought about which senses each of the animals would use to navigate throughout the woodland area. The children were not only challenged with using their sense of touch, hearing and smell - BLINDFOLDED to complete a rope walk to discover the Gruffalo at the end, but also to complete it during a short snow storm!
Could there be any more excitement? Well done Children we were really proud of your bravery and determination throughout!
In Maths, Year 1 have been learning all about mass. On Friday we practised our measuring skills by weighing our ingredients to make banana, honey and raisin muffins. We learned about measuring in grams and used our knowledge of numbers to 100 when weighing the ingredients on the digital scales. In PSHE this term we have been thinking about ways to keep ourselves healthy and we talked about how the ingredients can contribute to a healthy balanced diet.
Year 2 - Felt pouches and wintry forest school!
This week, Year 2 have worked hard to increase their writing stamina. Expanding on their space topic, the children imagined they were Neil Armstrong. They worked hard to visualise landing on the moon and use descriptive language to describe how their legs would shudder and wobble like jelly returning to Earth in the Apollo 11. In Maths, Year 2 have nearly finished their fractions topic. This week they have worked hard to overcome misconceptions and identify equivalent fractions.
In computing the children looked at abstraction and how by removing unnecessary detail, we can often make something clearer. We zoomed in and out of Google Earth and looked closely at the London Tube map. They applied knowledge of lessons in 2D shape and produced neat, bird-eye view drawings of their classrooms.
In Design and Technology, Year 2 demonstrated their excellent sewing skills (and patience!) by making felt pouches using blanket stitch. They started by threading their needles (never an easy task), tying a knot in the end, and sewing three sides together. Next week the children will decorate their pouches before taking them home. A special thank you to the parent helpers for giving up their free time to assist! This week, Year 2 also doubled up on their jumpers and snuggled under blankets to sit outside for Forest School. They measured trees, played games, and even watched the snow fall as a story was read. The children were all so excited to move their learning outside and behaved very sensibly when watching Tim drill holes in their wooden necklaces.
Year 3 - Wild robot woodland scene
Year 3 are almost half way through their Power of Reading book, ‘The Wild Robot’ and they are absolutely loving it! To celebrate World Maths Day, the children followed instructions (which were all written using fractions) to create their own Wild Robot woodland scene. They loved working together as a team to create their art and worked very independently. Raffy explained, “I liked how it was maths and art together. I also liked how we worked with our whole table and we were working together.”
Year 4 - Threats to the Amazon Rain Forest
In literacy this week we have started writing our non-chronological reports about 'Threats to the Amazon Rainforest' and the children have amazed us with all the knowledge that they have acquired over the last 4 weeks. We have also spent time sharing their rainforest project homework and we have been so impressed by the effort and quality of everyone's work. There was a range of models, fact files, newspaper reports, posters, booklets and video presentations and all of them were original and creative. Thank you to all the parents who supported at home to make the children's experiences so special.
In R.E. we have also enjoyed learning about different journey that religious people take. It was interesting to compare the similarities and differences of marriage in different religions and we had some wonderful discussions around the Hindu beliefs of karma and reincarnation.
Year 5 - Greek Gods and Goddesses
Year 5 have fully immersed themselves into our epic Greek myth tale - The Adventures of Odysseus. Without doubt Mr Curry's favorite book so far this year! The children have completed a whole range of different tasks; from plotting Odysseus's travels on an ancient map of antiquity, to plotting his emotional journey when arriving back on Ithaca. Additionally were have explored and debated Greek legacies, as well as designing our own Greek God and Goddess'.
Friday lunchtime has been rather busy with 27 children signed up for the knitting and crochet club. We have just finished week 3! Our enthusiastic beginners are led by our Year 5 experts Sophia and Jessica.
Year 6 have had a masterclass in the intricacies of the circulatory system this week.
Following on from their work in class for their ‘Amazing Anatomies’ topic, they welcomed Doug West into school to listen to a real- life surgeon tell them more about how the heart and lungs work and what happens when they go wrong.
As usual, Year 6 behaved brilliantly and were engaged and responsive as they listened to Doug describe his work in detail. There was also an interesting debate on the ethics of xeno transplantation which was inspired by our current class book ‘Pig Heart Boy.’
Some of the Y6 children and their families took part in a study called "Active 6" conducted by the University of Bristol earlier in the year. The data has been collated and the results are in! Thank you to those children and parents/carers who participated. Take a look at how active we are at Christ Church:
Splendid Sports from Christ Church School Teams
Last Friday we had a fantastic day in the sunshine at the annual Hockey Tournament. We played against a number of different schools in a round robin style tournament, until eventually, both of our teams progressed into the finals of their pools. Our B team were victories in all of their final matches: securing the title of 'Kings of the Court' and our A team also did fantastic in their games to secure the silver medals. Excellent sportsmanship was displayed by all and the children represented our school excellently. Well done guys ?
On Wednesday, we took our netball team along to the all girls Bee Netball Tournament. After winning ALL of their matches, the girls ended up in the final against some fierce competitors. At half time we were losing 2-1: now was the time to give it our all. The girls worked fantastically as a team to work the ball up the court to our shooters - who were unstoppable, and helped us to secure a 3 - 1 win and bring home the gold medals (and a shiny new plaque which is pride of place in the Library!) Well done girls - bring on the county finals next week.
A big thank you to all volunteers who helped at the disco and those that donated for the wishlist! The event could not have happened without your help. We hope the kids had a great time.
