It was raining cats and dogs this morning! Dougie, Year 3 explained to me he had read that the saying originated from Victorian times when cats and dogs living on the streets slipped off roofs when it was raining. There are other explanations as no-one is really sure of the saying’s origin, maybe see what you can find out.
Whilst the rain and the wind were not welcome this morning the safety of our children is more important. This view from my office window was really frustrating. I am in contact with the local police team to see what action can be taken before a child is seriously injured or worse. We are also discussing the cars parked across the pavement in front of the Reception pedestrian gate.
It was a shame that Year 2s trip to Bristol Forest school and Netball club were cancelled this morning but fortunately it turned out to be the right decision.
All class teachers have now held their telephone calls/Google meets with parents/carers, we hope this has been an informative additional opportunity to hear how your child is presenting in school following the re-opening on 8th March. Individual school reports will be issued at the beginning of July in the same format as last year and we remain hopeful that we will be able to invite parents/carers into school.
Thank you to the parents/carers who gave their time to facilitate the uniform sales last week and raise £450 for Save the Children. Please see information about our uniform supplier within this newsletter.
Attendance
It is a statutory requirement that all children attend school every day unless there is evidence of an authorised reason for absence. We are duty bound to apply this policy and attendance at our school this year when we have been open has been very good. However, I do need to remind parents/carers that honesty is the best policy when reporting absence as the children do like to share their news with us.
We are aware that there have been stock issues for our school uniform supplier Monkhouse. We have investigated this with them; naturally Covid, Brexit and the Suez Canal blockage have created problems with the supply chain (this is a nationwide problem), but we are seeking reassurances from the supplier that they will be able to return to a more normal shopping/ ordering experience by this summer.
Monkhouse reassure us that there should be no long term problem with Christ Church School uniform stock.
They are strongly recommending that back to school uniform for September is purchased in June/ July to ensure availability.
To support social distancing, currently the store in Stoke Gifford is operating appointment only in store shopping - hopefully this will return to drop in shopping as well as appointment after the next lockdown stage eases.
Delivery should be available free of charge to school; however Christ Church school has unintentionally dropped off their delivery list on the website - this should be fixed following their website update on 1st June.
Please see website for guidance on appointment booking and online ordering - https://www.monkhouse.com/parentguide
As a school we will be monitoring the situation.
WOW - 'Walk to School Challenge'
On Monday 7th June, we will be launching WOW – the ‘Walk To School Challenge’ from Living Streets. A letter, with more information, will be coming on Monday next week. The challenge will celebrate the active travel that the majority of our families do; it will also encourage parents not to drive to the streets around school, but instead park and then walk the remaining distance, a mere FIVE to TEN minute journey by foot. Parking further away will help improve the safety of our streets around school, whilst improving health and increasing exercise.
Mr Campbell
This morning's Cavalcade (Celebration Assembly) started off in 4LC with a live interview with Freya, where we learned about her amazing effort in raising over £3500 for the Oxygen for India Emergency Appeal. Along with her sister, they walked 5 laps around the Downs, a whopping 12km. We thought about how many laps around school that is; 40 laps is the answer - WOW!!! The money raised will support with improving Oxygen supplies for the patients, suffering from COVID, in Indian hospitals. We are all super proud of you Freya - such a thoughtful and caring idea - well done. We look forward to finding out about your next awesome idea.
Reception had a special assembly on Tuesday, where they learned about an interesting visitor to Bristol - Pterry the Pteranodon. The children thought about where he had visited from and where he would fly to next, they also thought about what Pterry would like to eat - would the muddy banks of the Avon at low tide provide yummy food?
Have a look at the video report about Pterry.
Pterry with a silent 'P'
The children have really enjoyed playing in the outdoor area – using pegs to make their own tent or shelter from the wind and taking turns to go through the tunnel. In Maths they have been using tens frames with counters and pebbles to practise their taking away skills which has been a fun challenge. Geraldine introduced a new sound this week ‘ay’ –may I play! It turned out to be Geraldine’s birthday and it is the month of May! Someone else very important to Reception celebrates their birthday this weekend – Mrs Richardson! A big Happy Birthday from all the children and staff. We hope you have a lovely day!
Year 1 Multiplying in Maths and Identifying Trees
This week in Maths Year 1 have been learning all about multiplication by making and adding equal groups and making arrays. We’ve been busy practising counting in 2s, 5s and 10s by making skip counting number lines using Lego and Numicon.
In Science, we’ve been learning all about deciduous and evergreen trees. Yesterday we braved the windy, drizzly weather and headed outside to identify some of the beautiful trees in our playground and learn if they were deciduous or evergreen. We found Lime, Holly, Sycamore, Gingko and we were very excited to see the first Elderflowers appearing on one of the Elder trees.
This week in Year 2, we have been exploring traditional fairy tales. In our drama lesson we read some of our favourite fairy tales aloud. Also, we acted out alternative versions of 'Sleeping Beauty' and 'The Three Little Pigs'. We enjoyed using our voices (varying our pitch and tone) and body movements to portray how a character feels and behaves. We showed excellent collaboration working as teams.
We have also been busy painting some sensational fairy tale landscapes. We used our creative skills to paint water colour scenes depicting beautiful fantasy lands. Here are some of our masterpieces.
We have also continued learning about Florence Nightingale and her exceptional contribution to modern hospitals and nursing. This week we wrote diary entries imagining we were Florence Nightingale. We wrote about her experience when she first arrived in Scutari. We thought about our five senses as we described what she saw, heard, smelt, felt and tasted.
Well done for showing such outstanding enthusiasm with your learning this week Year 2!
A really successful week for Year 3! The children have produced some beautiful writing inspired by our book, which we are sending home for you all to enjoy.
Our ‘Riotous Royalty’ topic is still in full flow and the children are really enjoying it. They are incredible at remembering dates, events and the details of historic battles that took place. We folded 'fortune tellers' about Henry VIII and his many wives.
We have continued to tackle time and are now becoming experts at telling Miss Riddiford and Mr Eades when we should be doing everything!
Well done Year 3, as ever we are so proud of you.
Year 4 have started a new History unit called Leisure and Entertainment. This week we have been learning about the Swinging Sixties! We have all LOVED learning some 60s dance moves, looking at 60s fashion and hairstyles and listening to 60s music. It has been wonderful to hear all the facts the children have about their own families in the sixties and the 60s music they listen to at home! Here are some pictures of some of our dance moves and also our Swinging Sixties party invitations.
In French, this term Y4 children are learning numbers 0-31, days of the week and the months of the year. This week, we rehearsed the names of the months several times and created gestures to depict the months. The children took turns to play charades: one child at the front of the class did a mime and the other children had to guess which month it was.
This week we were very excited to join in with other schools across the city of Bristol to take part in a virtual concert set up by Bristol Plays Music. All children put in a 100% effort and dedication throughout the vibrant hour long concert, which was jointly hosted by Naomi Wilkinson, children’s TV presenter, who revealed that she went to school in Bristol. When she gave a shout out to Christ Church the children were extremely thrilled to be recognised for their exemplary participation. The atmosphere in the classrooms was electric. Here are some pictures and a short clip to share the joy of the afternoon with you all. Well done Year 5.
Year 6 Protractor Perfectionists
Who knew geometry could be so much fun! 6ED are protractor perfectionists and angle engineers. This week we have been investigating how to recognise, draw and calculate with angles. We then harnessed our inner Euclid and got investigating quadrilaterals and polygons.
Our second book to support our Climate Change topic is ‘Varmints.’ We have listened to the opening scene’s music and drawn pastel pictures of our imagined settings. Then we watched the animation and read the picture book and compared the filmic devices with the authors text to see how they compared and contrasted.
