Last Saturday in the late September sunshine our PTA provided a most enjoyable fun run at Clifton College New Fields (see photos later in the newsletter). The fun run fisherman led the warm up and then the runners were off running laps of the field to raise funds for our school. It was a great event thank you to our PTA and everyone who was able to support. Come along on Thursday 7th October, 7.30pm at school to find out about future events that the PTA are planning and how you can help. Isn’t it great being able to get back together making a positive contribution to our community.
We have had a wonderful week of creativity inspired by ‘Bristol at the heart of our Art.’ Please come and visit our exhibition over the weekend of Saturday 16th/Sunday 17th October 11-3pm in our school hall. There will be café serving drinks and cakes and a workshop for pre-school aged children. We would love some help in the café and will be sending out a Google form on Monday to request support. Again, it is such a popular event with our community and another opportunity to reconnect.
Mrs Richardson led meetings for parents/carers of children in Reception and Year One this week to hear about how we are supporting the transition for our Year One children and beginning the learning journey for our Reception children. If you were unable to attend the presentations are on Google Classroom and have been sent out via Szapp.
Our enthusiastic PTA are ready to start our weekly class Cake Sales. This coming week will be Mrs Duquemin’s class on Thursday 7th October at 3.15pm. Parents/carers of 3ED provide donations of cakes for the sale which the children will bring in to school on the day. Shop bought donations only at the moment please. At the end of the day 3ED parents/carers will set up the sale in the playground outside 3ED and everyone is welcome to buy a cake on the way home. Funds raised go to the class and the children help to decide what they would like to spend the money on-puzzles, games, books etc.
Jane and Tim, Forest school leaders will be providing an Autumnal themed workshop for every class in our outdoor classroom over 3 days before half term. Parents / carers will receive a Szapp to let you know when your child is participating. On Thursday 7th October it will be Year 4, Year 2 and Class 5TC. We all love these days and are so fortunate to have this space at school which our PTA helped to fund for us.
Peripatetic music lessons are starting next, we have children learning guitar, violin, drums, woodwind and cello. It will be great to hear these instruments around school again.
Parent/carer appointments with the class teachers:
Bookings are going well so far with our online booking system via Szapp. Please remember to make a booking if you haven’t already done so and our school office will readily support you if you are having difficulty.
School Lunches:
Please be aware that our catering provider AiP are experiencing delays in deliveries in the same way most industries are experiencing disruption. Therefore our cook will have to be flexible to provide a meal with the supplies he has received. The result being that there may be changes to the menu on the day. This happened once this week when he had to swap the sausages day for the curry day. At this point in time there is no concern that AiP will not be able to provide a meal but please understand when changes are made. We are fortunate that our meals are freshly prepared on the day and that we have a skilled cook who is passionate about the meals he prepares for our children.
The Bristol Parent-an online magazine visited our school last week and have now published a feature about our school. Do read the feature and take a look at the magazine, as it provides lots of information and articles for families in Bristol.
PTA Fun Run
Thanks again for all those who took part! This has been a brilliant event which we hope the kids really enjoyed. If you haven’t already done so, please remember to pay in any sponsorship money.

Reception - Morph & Balloons of Bristol
A big well done to all the children for completing their first full days at school and super eating in the dining hall. We are all so proud of you!
This week Reception have been busy taking part in our whole school 'Art Week'. We have made 'Morph' sculptures, created colourful hot air balloon collages, and designed our own monoprint postcards!
We also painted water colour houses! Look out for them at the upcoming Arts Trail.
Year 1 - Houses and Balloons of Bristol
Year 1 have had a fantastic arts week! To start the week we went out into the playground and sketched some of the beautiful buildings that surround the school. We looked carefully at the smaller details and tried to include these in our sketches. Then we used fine liner pens to create miniature versions of the houses. We have enjoyed exploring a variety of mediums to celebrate Bristol in our artwork. Year 1 have created clay houses, hot air balloons using Brusho paints and marker pens and collages of colourful Bristol houses. We look forward to sharing our wonderful work with you!
Year 2 - Colourful Scenes of Bristol
We have also managed to squeeze in some maths, including lessons using the chrome books and iPads, and having a creative number bond session.
Year 3 - Bristol Buildings and Banksy
We have had the most creative, crazy week and we have loved it!! The children have been busy creating two stunning pieces of art, which we can’t wait to show you all.
We started by thinking about some of our favourite architecture in Bristol, including Temple Meads station, Cabot Tower and Ashton Court. After creating a page in our sketchbook of all of our ideas, we started to do a pencil drawing of our chosen building then painted our drawing with watercolour. Our final step was to put some collage on the pictures and use black fine-liner to make it ‘pop’! The children were really proud of their work.
Our second piece of art is going to be a Banksy-style graffiti picture. We are even using spray paints to create the graffiti effect!
Year 4 - Celebrating Clifton Village
Year 4 have had a fantastic week of art immersion. We have created papier mache hot air balloons and painted them with fun and colourful patterns which we designed in our sketch books. We have also been celebrating the shops and cafes in Clifton Village and have used pencil, watercolour and fine line black pen to bring the buildings to life. Our final piece showcases what can be seen through the window in each shop or cafe.
Who could believe it? We've survived yet another Arts week!
First and foremost, the children have been utterly brilliant. Their energy and enthusiasm know no bounds. 'Bristol at the Heart of our Art' was our focus this year and Year 5 explored several different Bristol based artists and successful recreated their pieces of art.
The photos showcase the different activities throughout the week. A massive, huge, heartfelt thank you to Liz Hunter for coming in and helping with our clay terraced houses.
Well done to all the children who excelled this week. We are very proud of you!

Year 6 - Houses and Landscapes of Bristol
Wow - what a jam packed week we've had! Monday saw 6ED print making with Liz Hunter, a former parent and local artist. They worked hard, thinking about the composition of their pictures in the morning and later considered the dynamism and texture of their prints. In the afternoon they we're busy inking their rollers and feeling excited about the big reveal. You can see some examples pictured below.
6BB meanwhile took to the outdoors to being their spray painting projects. They began by looking at the renowned Bristol graffiti artist: Banksy, before thinking about the rich culture of graffiti which is spread all throughout Bristol. The children have now prepped the linework for their spray painting pieces and we will continue with these projects next week when hopefully the weather is a little kinder to us!
Later in the week, Year 6 turned their hand to sewing, and have each been tasked with creating a sewn version of their house which we will then display as a whole group during the forthcoming Arts Trail.
The end of the week was no less busy as the children spent time imitating a local artist (Jenny Urquhart) and created their our landscapes of Bristol. We also spent some time painting our clay balloons which we began last week. You may say that Year 6 have been exceptionally busy!
We can't wait for you to all get a chance to see our works of art soon.

Bristol at the Heart of our Art
We are delighted to be participating again in the bi-annual North West Bristol Arts trail - exhibiting over the weekend of 16th & 17th October in our school halls.
During the w/c 27th September we will have a whole school Arts Week working to the theme 'Bristol at the Heart of our Art'. We are so lucky to live in the heart of Bristol, a city which brims with art, architecture, music and performance. We will be studying our city and the artists who capture it to inpsire our own artwork for the Arts Trail.
“ Bristol is a vibrant city, heaving with culture and worth exploring. My aim is for my paintings to bring just a little bit of that into people’s homes!…I love what I do and I hope that comes across in my pictures..” Jenny Urquhart
