Reception - Learning about the World -In the sky and beyond

It has been another jam-packed week of learning activities in Reception. The children really enjoyed their ‘Woodland Workshop’ in the outside classroom which focussed on signs of winter and hibernation.
Reception have continued finding out more facts about space by identifying and ordering the planets in the Solar system through singing songs and looking at fantastic books such as ‘Meet the planets’ by Carly Hart and ‘Eight little planets’ by Chris Ferrie and Lizzy Doyle.
They also had fun designing their own aliens and underpants after hearing the story ‘Aliens love Underpants’ by Claire Freedman for their physical development using green playdough and loose parts as decoration. They were pantastic!!
The phonics focus for this week was v, w, x and y – look out for the correct pronunciation of the phoneme ‘y’ on Google classroom as it is a bit tricky!! We are so proud of how hard the children are using their phonemes to blend for reading – keep on practising!
The children were practising 1 more and 1 less using googly eyes on aliens and talking about what they noticed happening to each number. Did it get larger or did it get smaller? Then they used lots of loose parts to make 1,2 or 3 and talked about the composition of each number.
At the end of the week the children were introduced to the festival of Divali to find out who, why and how it is celebrated. They were able to hear stories, explore artefacts and design their own colourful mehndi and rangoli patterns using chalks and pulses. Divali begins on the 12th of November.
