History

To ensure that children develop their ability to question and enquire about their place in the world from the local then international and finally a world-wide perspective.

“The more you know about the past, the better prepared you are for the future.”

Theodore Roosevelt

At Christ Church, History forms an integral part of the curriculum. We believe that our History curriculum inspires children’s curiosity, enables them to engage with challenging themes through using the past to inform their opinions and encourages them to ask critical questions. It teaches children to respect and value diversity by showing respect for different viewpoints and ideas as well as the ability to work effectively together in groups. It also helps enable the children to have a better understanding of the society in which they live and that of the wider world.

By linking our learning to a range of topics, children have opportunities to investigate and interpret the past, understand chronology, as well as key concepts such as change and causation, and build an overview of Britain’s past as well as that of the wider world. We aim to provide children with the ability to draw links and parallels across different periods of time as well as developing an awareness for how our lives today have been influenced and shaped by actions of those in the past. We aim to embed the history of Bristol and our local area in our topics where possible to ensure that children are given the tools to see history around them and not just something which happened long ago..

At the end of a history unit we will often host a ‘Wow’ event. This could be showcasing our learning during a class assembly, inviting another year group to listen to our learning or examine our homework projects or even dressing up to celebrate our learning during a topic day such as Ancient Greece day. Our units or topics can be linked to our Power of Reading books to solidify our understanding whilst we also ensure we provide cross-curricular opportunities with links to: Maths, Literacy, Science, Computing, Art and D&T.

At Christ Church we are fortunate to be able to utilise our beautiful and historic city and surrounding area for field trips and visits. Children have the opportunity to visit the Roman Baths in Bath, explore the history of Bristol on teacher-lead tours of the city during our Local History studies, visit our local museums and National Trust properties such as Tyntesfield to augment and enrich our curriculum.
